My name is Jackson and I am from Ontario. I hope our story brings light to some dark situations.
In August of 2020, my husband Jake and I found out that we were expecting Di/Di twins due April 1, 2021.
At my anatomy scan at 21 weeks the ultrasound tech said she had to send me up to an OB because my cervix was “a little short for this gestation”. The OB explained that my cervix was only 6mm, paper-thin. I needed to go to a level 3 hospital now. I was then told that I had a bicornuate uterus with both babies in my right horn. A short cervix, the bicornate uterus with born in 1 horn, & twins. The odds were not in our favour.
2 days later my cervix was 4mm, they stopped measuring after that. We were prepared for the worst. I was put on immediate bed rest and took progesterone tablets vaginally. A cerclage was not a good option for my situation. 11 weeks passed, with hospital bed rest over Christmas with no visitors due to Covid restrictions. My water broke at 32.1weeks and delivered at 32.2 two healthy babies who spent 1 month in NICU with no major complications.
Every day I am thankful for this miracle, but I will never forget that pregnancy that was full of heartache. I wish I was made aware of my bicornuate uterus sooner and the risks that came with that. I wonder if I also had a cervical scan done earlier I would possibly have had early detection of the short cervix. Thus a cerclage could have been an option or bedrest earlier on. We have to advocate for ourselves.
